Altar Guild

The Altar Guild is a group of people who are called to serve God by preparing and tending the places where Episcopalians worship. The various Guilds are organized in different ways in different places — some have only one person, some have as many as twenty, and some now have men in the organization. Wherever they are, the work they do is done together as an offering of time and many talents. This work is accomplished quietly behind the scenes.

Guild responsibilities include purchasing and laundering linens, replenishing the supply of bread and wine, ordering flowers and candles, participating in special ceremonies such as weddings, memorial services, stripping the altar on Maundy Thursday, and preparing for Advent and Easter. the Sunday Eucharist is the service that involves the most effort and knowledge. when the clergy wish to make changes in any procedure, they will do so.

In the past year, the Altar guild of St. john's has assisted in preparations for weddings, baptisms, memorial services, and receptions following memorial services. Polishing sessions have been held to clean and prepare the brass and silver for church observances; flowers have been delivered to the sick, to shut-ins, to the hospital, and to nursing homes.

The commitment of Altar guild members is to serve the Lord rather than "getting a job done." Any person wishing to serve on the Altar Guild should contact Sarah Richtmyer, Parish Secretary, at 607.273.6532.
